Building Information Modeling — BIM — is the making of data-rich three-dimensional models under disciplined information management, framed internationally by the ISO 19650 series.

A BIM model is less a picture than a database wearing geometry. Each element — a wall, a truss, a platform — carries data: dimensions, materials, versions, relationships, responsibilities. Change the model and the drawings, schedules, and quantities derived from it follow. The approach was developed for buildings, where many parties must share one evolving description of a structure without losing track of which description is current.

ISO 19650 is the management half: naming conventions, version and status control, defined exchange points, and a common data environment — in plain terms, everyone knows which model is the model, what state it is in, and what each part means. The discipline matters as much as the geometry; an undisciplined model decays into the same ambiguity as a folder of drawings.

Applied to temporary constructions — sets, installations, exhibition architecture — BIM has a particular consequence: a model rigorous enough to fabricate from is, brought to as-built state, rigorous enough to archive. Geometry, materials, and assembly logic survive in a structured, machine-readable form from which the work could be rebuilt long after the original was destroyed.
